Completed projects Here you will find all the projects that we have completed.

Streetlight project (Currently on hold)

Responding to requests received from the community, we obtained permission for this project on 22 June 2015 from Director of Technical and Infrastructure Services,
Mr. JS Mokgatle.

The aim of the project is to repair streetlights through the financial support of the community and by doing so, improve the safety and security of the residents.

It became apparent during the early stages of this project that some repairs require the assistance of the municipality as it involves the repair of the supply cables.  Due to the limited funds that we have available for these repairs, we partnered with the electrical department of the municipality to assist the electricians with the tracing and repair of cable faults.

Since the inception of this project we managed to repair several street lights through funding received from the community.  These repairs regularly involve the complete rewiring of a pole including the replacement of the ballast, light fitting, all wiring and the globe.

We assisted the municipal electrical department in fixing numerous line faults to date which also resulted in entire streets having working street lights.

Bird sanctuary

The rehabilitation and restoration of the bird sanctuary, better known as the Checkers Dam area, to its original pride serves the purpose of enabling the residents to have an area in town where they can enjoy a relaxing time with family and friends whilst being surrounded by the diverse birdlife of the area.

This is a phased project due to the complex area and the total collapse of the sanctuary over a number of year.  The initial phase, which included the cleaning of the dam and repairing of its outlet, is reaching completion.  The following phase will be the cleaning of the dryland area and the removal of all intruder plants and trees.  The final phase will be to erect a proper fence around the area to control access and safeguard those residents visiting the area.

With the support of the community and local business, the likes of Balow Engineering and QPS, we managed to clear the dam of the plant overgrowth and restore the natural flow of the water into the dam.

Part of the challenge that we were faced with was the erosion that was taking place at the outflow from the dam and on 11 January 2016, we received permission from the Municipal Manager, Mr. SM Molala, to backfill the affected area and in doing so, save homes and the church parking lot from being destroyed by the erosion that was taking place.

We also received assistance from the municipality with the transfer of the soil that we removed from the dam to build a natural barrier between the R57 and Hersov Road.

Since we started with this project a remarkable change has been noticed by the residents in the area with regards to the return of bird species to the area.  Many residents once again use the area as it was intended and we also received positive feedback with regards to crime in the specific area being brought under control.

Before we started with this project

With the support of local business we managed to receive some heavy equipment to assist with the project

Traffic signs

We’ve managed to come to an arrangement with the traffic department to assist with the replacement of missing and damaged traffic signs in the area whereby the department provides us with the sign and we provide the posts to which the signs must be affixed.  As we do not have permission to erect the signs, the department provides us with the labour force required to install the signs where needed.

Cleaning of public areas

We received many requests from residence with regards to the state of the public spaces and received permission for the clean-up of these areas from the Municipal Manager,
Mr. SM Molala on 22 June 2015.

The primary objective of this project is to clean the greenbelt areas to promote the safety and security of the residents using these areas as well as to assist the SAPS with their patrolling in these areas.  We found the SAPS to be reluctant to patrol these areas with their vehicles as serious damage to tyres and the vehicles itself occurred on a regular basis as the drivers were unable to see where hidden dangers like glass bottles and holes.

It was also virtually impossible for the municipality to maintain these areas with the tractors and slashers as damage to both of these instruments where almost guaranteed.

To date we managed to clean four major greenbelt areas with the support of the public and local business.  The support that we received from the community as well as the municipality during two of these actions, the latest being the 2016 Mandela Day clean-up, was invaluable.

Sasolburg CBD

A Central Business District (CBD) is the commercial and business centre of a town.  It is often synonymous with the towns’ financial district and as such, ensures that money generated by residents in the area are reinvested in the area which stimulates the economic growth through job creation and other activities.  It is therefore a crucial part of any town.

It is an unfortunate truth that the Sasolburg CBD area has been neglected over several year with the result being that most of the economically active residents are spending their money in our neighbouring towns instead of reinvesting it locally.  The socio-economic impact of this can clearly be observed when one visits the CBD area in that shops are standing empty, the area is filthy, crime is high and the infrastructure has been severely vandalised.

The purpose of this project will be to upgrade and repair the CBD area in order to attract business and residents back to the area and in doing so, strengthen the local economy which in turn will allow for job creation to take place.

The following actions need to be taken in order to upgrade and repair the CBD area:

  1. The repair and securing of all electrical distribution stations
  2. Repair and upgrade of the lights in the area
  3. Repair and upgrade of the water sprinkler system and gardens
  4. Repair of the water leaks in the area
  5. Repair and upgrade of the walkways
  6. Repair and upgrade of the water features
  7. Relocation of the informal traders to a suitable area
  8. Repair and upgrade of waste bins
  9. Cleaning of the area

The SGAG, with the assistance of some of the staff from the municipal electrical department, have already managed to repair a significant number of the lights in the area.  A full assessment of the electrical infrastructure in the area has been done and repairs to this infrastructure is currently in progress.  This includes the securing of new doors to the electrical distribution stations.

The SGAG is currently also negotiating with some of the business owners in the area to assist with the project.

Eric Louw traffic circle

This is likely the single most known place in town for family and marriage photos and is a landmark known and loved by all residents.  It was therefore unfortunate to learn of the demise of the area due to vandalism and equipment failure.

The aim of the project was to restore the fountain area by sealing the dam, replacing the electrical wiring, replacing the lights in and around the dam as well as the repair of the pump.  Unfortunately the pump was irreparable and a replacement pump was bought and installed by contributions that we received from the community.
